Our posture

The Apologist's Creed

We stand firm, clothed in the full armor of God:

the belt of truth around our waist, the breastplate of righteousness on our chest,

our feet ready with the gospel of peace.

We take up the shield of faith to quench every fiery dart,

the helmet of salvation to guard our minds,

and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God, living and active.

We demolish arguments raised against the knowledge of God,

yet we answer every question with gentleness and respect,

always ready to give a reason for the hope within us.

We contend for the faith once delivered to the saints, and we speak the truth in love.

The armor of God

Paul wrote from prison, probably chained to a Roman soldier. Each piece of the armor describes how a Christian stands firm, and how an apologist should carry themselves.

  1. 01 / 06Ephesians 6:14

    Belt of truth

Truth holds everything else together. The apologist's first duty is honesty: with the evidence, with the objector, and with their own doubts.

  2. 02 / 06Ephesians 6:14

    Breastplate of righteousness

Arguments are weighed by the life of the one who makes them. Christ's righteousness guards the heart, and a godly life commends the gospel.

  3. 03 / 06Ephesians 6:15

    Gospel of peace

We are not trying to win arguments but to make peace between people and God. Every answer should point toward the good news.

  4. 04 / 06Ephesians 6:16

    Shield of faith

Trust in God's character stops the fiery darts of accusation and doubt, including the ones aimed at our own hearts.

  5. 05 / 06Ephesians 6:17

    Helmet of salvation

Salvation guards the mind. We love God with all our minds (Matthew 22:37) and think clearly because we are secure in Him.

  6. 06 / 06Ephesians 6:17

    Sword of the Spirit

The Word of God is our only offensive weapon. It is living and active (Hebrews 4:12), and the Spirit, not our cleverness, makes it effective.

Read the passage

Ephesians 6:10–18

10Finally, be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power. 11Put on the full armor of God, so that you can make your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this world’s darkness, and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13Therefore take up the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you will be able to stand your ground, and having done everything, to stand. 14Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness arrayed, 15and with your feet fitted with the readiness of the gospel of peace. 16In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18Pray in the Spirit at all times, with every kind of prayer and petition. To this end, stay alert with all perseverance in your prayers for all the saints.
